Meet Your Woodies (Wood Roaches)
Woodies are a favourite for a reason:
✔ Quiet
✔ Low smell
✔ Easy to care for
Get the basics right and they’ll last ages
Step 1: Set Them Up
When they arrive:
Place them in a smooth-sided, ventilated container
Paint Fluon on the sides of the container to avoid escapees.
Add egg cartons for hiding and climbing
Keep them in a dark, quiet spot
They prefer the dark — think “cupboard”, not “windowsill”
Step 2: Keep Them Warm
Woodies like it warm but not extreme:
Ideal temp: 22–28°C
Cool = slower, less active
Warm = more active and better feeders
Room temp is usually perfect
Step 3: Feed Them (Gut Loading)
Healthy woodies = better nutrition for your reptiles
Feed them:
- Carrot
- Leafy greens
- Fruit (small amounts)
- Bug Boost Dry insect feed
Tip:
Carrot is a winner — food + hydration in one
Step 4: Hydration
Keep moisture controlled:
Use:
- Fresh veg
- Hydration gels (InsectaSip)
Avoid:
- Open water bowls
Too much moisture = smell + problems
Step 5: Avoid These Common Mistakes
Too much moisture / humidity
Poor ventilation
Overcrowding
Leaving old food to rot

Dry + warm = happy woodies
Step 6: Keep It Clean
- Remove old food regularly
- Keep bedding and surfaces dry
- Clear out waste build-up over time
Woodies are naturally low smell — unless things get damp
Feeding Time Tips
- Great for reptiles, birds, and chickens
- Feed appropriate size
- Dust with calcium if needed
