Fast Five Facts - Chickens

by Karen Nilsson

Chickens can differentiate between more than 100 faces. They can react differently to different people and even distinguish between different animals. For example they can tell which dog belongs to the family.

Chickens experience REM sleep – which means they are capable of dreaming. They also see in colour better than humans do.

Chickens are chatty! There are more than 30 known types of clicks and boks including different vocalizations to warn of different threats

They are omnivores. They’ll eat grains, vegetable table scraps and insects like mealworms and crickets but also larger prey like small mice and lizards.

Roosters perform a little dance called ‘tidbitting’ in which they make sounds and move their head up and down, picking up and dropping a bit of food. This dives the hens wild as females prefer males that often perform tidbitting and have larger, brighter combs on top of their heads.
